General care

Although not as common a sight as they used to be many people still keep a tortoise in their back garden. They usually originate from the Mediterranean and will find our climate much cooler than their natural habitat. During the summer months your tortoise should be more than happy freely roaming in your garden, but be very careful to make it 'tortoise proof', as they are accomplished climbers. We would always recommend that your tortoise is micro-chipped to make them easily identifiable should they succeed in escaping.

Hibernation

Most tortoises are hibernated in the winter by their owners, as this can be a difficult time for you and your pet and would suggest that you give us a call for advice on the best way to approach it.

Nutrition

Depending on the species their diet should consist of grasses, dandelions, clover etc, from your lawn with additional fruit and vegetables daily. It is also advisable to add vitamin powder to their food weekly to prevent dietary deficiencies. Always make sure that your tortoise is regularly wormed and has an annual health check. Just before hibernation is a good time as we can ensure they are in peak condition. It is always worth bearing in mind that tortoises generally live in excess of 50 years and require a long-term commitment.
